Your ideal clients are out there, here’s how you attract them

“It was all a dream,” said the late, great Biggie Smalls. Starting your new business may have been a dream of yours and now you’re taking the steps to make your dream a reality. You’ve thought about the important aspects of establishing your business such as registration, setting up your website, ordering materials, designing your logo, and a plethora of other things, but you may have overlooked one key aspect that will make the difference of your business moving from launch to scaling for growth: your clients. Do you know who they are? Depending on the phase of your business, you may have acquired clients by word of mouth, through your promotional efforts, or through your close networks.

The question I ask is, have you really considered who your clients are? When launching a business, the initial goal is to sell to everyone and drive as much revenue as possible. Reaching everyone would require significant resources and effort. The ideal way to establish and expand your client base is to have a dream client profile, aka ideal client profile or buyer persona, which outlines a specific persona within your target audience. As a business owner, it is imperative to have an idea of the target audience for your products or services. By thinking specifically of the ideal client for your products or service, you can maximize your efforts to connect with them.

So, who is your target client? What details should you know about them? Why is this important?

A buyer persona is a profile of your dream client. The persona details who they are and includes age, race/ethnicity, marital status, their wants, their lifestyle, their problems, where they get their information, what brings them joy, etc. These details help you put together a client profile that helps you understand the factors that drive them to engage with your products or services and the challenges you solve for them.

Establishing a buyer persona helps make the client real, which positions you to market to them more effectively. By developing a deep understanding of your dream client’s joy and pain, you can develop advertisements with messaging that resonates with them, attracting them to your brand, compelling them to buy from you. All of your marketing—ads, social media posts, website, everything—should speak to this persona.

The more your messaging speaks to your ideal client, the more you will attract them. This doesn’t mean you won’t attract those who are not in your target audience, but by focusing on one persona, you set the stage to maximize your marketing efforts. As you build your business, don’t forget to include your client in your vision.

Launching a new business can be both an exciting and a daunting endeavor.  It's hard work, but you’re building something that can change the world.  The path to turn a vision into reality can be filled with unknown variables, but with a keen understanding of the foundational principles necessary to launch, it can put you on the path for success.
